CELESTE ART PRIZE 2006
SHORT LISTED & FINALIST ARTISTS
The Celeste Art Prize is delighted to announce the finalists & the short listed artists for the 2006 prize.

The response to the prize in its first year has been extremely positive (1,120 artists) and we would like to thank everyone who has entered and supported the prize.

Submissions came in from all over the country and from UK artists living and working abroad as far a field as Australia and New Zealand representing a wide variety of artistic styles and media.

Our special thanks go to the Goldsmiths College Curatorial Programme for their enthusiasm and hard work in the selection of the artists.

Dr Andrew Renton, Director, Curating, Goldsmiths College
comments:

"It has been an amazing experience for the Curatorial Programme at Goldsmiths. Our encounter with the work of over a thousand artists confirms, despite age-old suggestions to the contrary, that painting is alive and kicking."

Whilst submissions in the Professional Artists’ category were of a quantity and quality to make an interesting & competitive selection process, the number of submissions in the Student category was disappointingly low.

After much discussion between the Curators & the Organisers it was decided to restructure the Student Artist section to take this into account.

There will be 70 short listed & 30 finalist students alongside the 170 short listed artists & 30 finalists in the Professional Artist category.

Steps will be taken to improve the Student category for 2007 and it is hoped that the amendments to the entry requirements will raise the number of Student submissions next year.

The 60 finalists will exhibit at The Well, Old Truman Brewery, Brick Lane, London from Tuesday, 23rd May until Sunday 28th May 2006. The exhibition will be open daily 10am-7pm.

During the exhibition the finalists will vote to award the prize money to the artist & student artist. The award ceremony will take place on Sunday 28th May 2006.

The short listed artists & finalists will have their submitted work published in the accompanying catalogue to the exhibition.
